Doing your own wiring in Belgium: is it allowed and how do you do it safely?

Many handy self-builders and renovators do their own wiring. That is possible, but the installation must comply with the AREI and be inspected.

Building or renovating and want to save money? Then you may be thinking of doing your own wiring. In Belgium that is allowed, with one important condition: the installation must comply with the AREI and is inspected by an accredited inspection body before it is put into use.

Where does it often go wrong?

  • Wrong cable sizes for the circuit protection
  • Too many sockets or light points on one circuit
  • Missing or incorrect earth connections
  • Sockets and switches in prohibited zones in the bathroom
  • A distribution board that is not built logically or according to the rules
  • No diagrams or incomplete diagrams

The happy medium: DIY with guidance

With a DIY package you do most of the work yourself: cutting channels, fitting conduits and boxes, pulling wires. A professional designs the installation, supplies the right materials, follows up on the work and takes care of the distribution board, the connections and the diagrams. You save money while the installation is ready for inspection.

Safety first

Never work on live circuits, always switch off the right circuit and check with a tester. In doubt? Ask an electrician.
